MTSS: Improvement Science in Action for Building Better K-12 Education

Improvement science is a problem-solving approach designed to use interactive cycles of inquiry to produce actionable steps for improvement while also enriching the learning journey. For school districts, improvement science can guide the implementation and facilitation of system-level solutions, such as a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). 

In this session, Chief Learning Officer of Branching Minds Dr. Eva Dundas, and Managing Director of Technology at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Jojo Manai, educational leaders will learn about:

  • The fundamental principles of improvement science and its usage by Networked Improvement Communities
  • How improvement science and data can be used to guide positive change within an education system  
  • The parallels between MTSS and improvement science
  • The role of a leader within a system-level change initiative

About the presenter: 

Jojo Manai:
Jojo Manai is a senior associate managing director for collaborative technology at the Carnegie Foundation. He leads the technical team to provide Foundation-wide support for a variety of technology, including the development and administration of an information infrastructure for the Carnegie Foundation’s Design, Development & Improvement Research work, as well as the development of technology solutions for a wide range of collaboration tools to facilitate the work of Carnegie’s programs. Before coming to the Carnegie Foundation, Jojo was a search technical lead & project manager at Yahoo! where he supported rich results direct display, query pattern mining, intent analysis and impact prediction. He holds degrees in computer science and information technology from the Faculté des Sciences Economiques et de Gestion â€“ Sfax University. In the summer of 2005 he was awarded The UC Davis Citations for Excellence and Achievement Award, as an acknowledgment of his achievements and quality of work at the University of California

Dr. Eva Dundas:
Dr. Dundas is the Chief Learning Officer of Branching Minds, where she pursues her mission to bridge the gap between the science of learning and education practice. Dr. Dundas has a Ph.D. in Developmental and Cognitive Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University where she conducted research on how the brain develops when children acquire visual expertise for words and faces. Her research also explores how the relationship between neural systems (specifically language and visual processing) unfolds over development, and how those dynamics differ with neurodevelopmental disorders like dyslexia and autism. She has published articles on that subject in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuropsychologia, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, and Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Dr. Dundas also has a M.Ed. in Mind, Brain, and Education from Harvard University; and a B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.
