“A community school is a 'whole-child' school improvement strategy where the district and school work closely with teachers, students, families, and partners.“

See how the components of the CA Community Schools Framework align with the goals and values of CA’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as a way to organize schools around the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs of youth.

    Integrate Student Support

To provide high-quality support for students’ social-emotional and behavioral development, educators need to understand where their students are currently, which is at the heart of the CA MTSS framework.

    How we help:

The Branching Minds platform provides districts and schools the ability to integrate data from several SEL and Behavioral Health assessments, where the results are presented alongside academic assessments, intervention plans, behavior incidents and progress monitoring, and other documents and communications.

    Provide Student-Centered Learning

MTSS is designed to provide targeted support to students based on their individual needs and abilities, which is a key aspect of student-centered learning. By placing the student at the center of the educational process and providing support tailored to their unique needs, MTSS supports a student-centered approach to learning.

    How we help:

Branching Minds helps educators identify struggling students and gain insights into their strengths and challenges across academic, cognitive, behavioral, and SEL skills. The platform curates learning support plans for educators from a robust library of evidence-based intervention programs and resources in addition to encouraging collaboration between educators about student progress, which helps to ensure that the learning experience remains student-centered and focused on the individual needs of each student.

Facilitate and Keep Track of Family Communications

Family communication is essential for the success of MTSS. It informs families about their child's progress and provides insights for tailored support. Regular communication also builds trust and positive relationships between families and schools, leading to better outcomes for students.

    How we help:

The BRM platform provides districts with a set of template letters that can be customized by the district so teachers can easily generate family communications for individual students and groups from the platform, streamlining the process for teachers while ensuring consistency in the type of information shared with families.

Make Your Practice Transparent and Collaborative

Effective MTSS breaks down silos between classroom teachers, support staff, and administrators and streamlines collaboration and communication.

    How we help:

Branching Minds was designed with these specific needs in mind. Any teacher who is rostered or assigned to a student in BRM is able to see any work that anybody is doing or has done.

MTSS Synopses for Elementary & Secondary School

Implementing MTSS can be daunting—there are so many moving parts. It is important that staff are aligned on what all those parts are, and how they come together. These synopses are good examples of how to align actions and definitions across staff in an elementary and secondary setting.

Where the rubber meets the road: a summary of MTSS practices in both an elementary and secondary setting.

About the CCSPP Sources of Funding

The CCSPP Planning Grants are for local educational agencies (LEAs) with no existing community schools. The grant awards are up to $200,000 and can be used for up to two years.

As schools across California are transforming into student and family-centered community hubs supporting the whole child, they are aligning practice to the MTSS framework to coordinate student academic, behavioral, and wellness needs.

CCSPP funding can be leveraged to implement or enhance the MTSS practice within your school or district as part of your Community School development planning.
